Fabricon Design developed an advanced modular fixturing system to support high-precision 5-axis CNC machining for a specialist work holding solutions provider.
The project focused on improving work holding efficiency, reducing setup time, and increasing repeatability across a wide range of components. By combining lightweight materials with precision-engineered locating systems, the solution enables faster changeovers while maintaining tight tolerances in demanding machining environments.

  • Challenge

    Traditional fixturing systems used in CNC machining are often heavy, time-consuming to set up, and designed for single-use applications.
    This creates challenges in modern manufacturing environments where flexibility and efficiency are critical. Conventional fixtures can require up to an hour of setup time and offer limited adaptability for high-mix production.
    The client required a solution that could:

    Maintain high levels of positional accuracy
    Enable seamless transfer between machining and inspection

    Existing systems relied heavily on manual clamping and re-alignment, introducing variability and increasing downtime between operations.

    Fabricon designed and developed a modular aluminium fixturing system built around precision location and repeatability.
    The system incorporates:
    Lightweight aluminium construction to reduce handling time
    Modular components for fast reconfiguration
    Precision locating features for consistent positioning
    A compact, stackable design to maximise machine access
    The system enables components to be transferred between machining and inspection stages while remaining secured within the original workholding fixture, preserving positional accuracy and eliminating the need for re-clamping.
    Using advanced CAD design and an iterative prototyping process, the system was tested and refined under real machining conditions to ensure rigidity, durability, and consistent performance.
